Most of the declarative registrations in NetBeans are done by merging XML File Systems (like Union File System on Linux just invented and productized sooner in 2000). The whole system looks like gigantic sandwich of various layers as very nicely described by Antonion at his Sandwiches!! article.

This is made possible because NetBeans offer a Virtual File System library.
